Which epoxy flooring company do I choose?
In a world where epoxy coatings are becoming more and more popular for garages, warehouses, commercial kitchens, basements, etc., many companies now offer these services. But how do I know which company is best for my project and what questions do I ask?
We wanted to write this blog for those new to epoxy. As we run into more and more clients who have little to no knowledge of the industry, the fear of choosing a company that can’t suit their needs, uses poor products, or simply doesn’t have the experience for the project… but say they do is becoming all the more common.
What we want to accomplish with this is to give you the framework to ask the right questions and do the right research so you know exactly what you’re paying for. Let’s give you a simple example for a walkthrough of how you should go about choosing the right company.
Example: Getting your warehouse/large storage garage coated with epoxy.
Step 1: Research
Maybe you had a friend or spotted a warehouse in town with a finished floor. Approach the owner/friend and ask them questions about their floor: who did it, how was their experience, how long did it take, what was the cost, do you recommend, etc. (Pro Tip: if the individual can’t answer these questions confidently, the service company didn’t do their job well enough.)
Call at least 5 different epoxy flooring companies and ask them questions about products they use (what percent solids? - the higher percentage the better), their process, floor preparation (this is the most important), how long have they operated in the industry, etc. Remember: These companies shouldn’t even be in your town - you are gaining knowledge in the industry and they should be more than happy to help you.
Now you have the general pricing for experienced/non-experienced companies with 100% solids/water-based epoxy products.
Step 2: Choosing Your Company
Now, you are going to reach out to 5 different companies within your area.
Ask the same questions you asked the out-of-town companies (products, experience, preparation of the floor, etc).
Next, you are going to ask questions tailored to your project: “have you dealt with a project like this, may I see prior work, testimonials from those customers, and means of communication.”
*Note: Notice I haven’t included anything about the price. This is because price shouldn’t solely determine which company you choose. You are looking for a company that can complete the project and is easy to work with. A company with these features is worth the cost if it is more than the others.
4. After comparing the companies and their features, choose the one that best suits YOUR needs. After all, this is YOUR project and they are here to help YOU.
Step 3: Completion
Congrats! You’ve successfully chosen the right company for your project.
